BOTOX®/Xeomin®

What is Botox or Xeomin?

Botox, short for botulinum toxin, and Xeomin which is incobotulinumtoxinA, are injectable medications that relax targeted facial muscles. When Botox or Xeomin are injected into the muscle they temporarily block the nerve impulses that are needed for contraction. The resulting muscle relaxation and decrease in movement reduce the appearance of lines or wrinkles in the area and can provide relief to tense jaw muscles. The results of both Xeomin and Botox are temporary. After a period of time, both wear off and the nerve impulses begin to reach the muscle again. This means that both treatments do require periodic maintenance (typically every 3-6 months) in order to maintain the results over time.

What is the Difference Between Botox and Xeomin?

The main difference between Xeomin and Botox has to do with the formulation. Xeomin is a “naked” neurotoxin. That is, Xeomin contains only a single ingredient (botulinum toxin A), while the formulation of Botox includes various protective proteins. The benefit of Xeomin’s pure-form means users have a lower chance of developing resistance (antibodies) that can limit its desired effects. AKA it can work better! We at The Henderson Dentist proudly offer Xeomin.

Treating TMJ and Bruxism with Botox/Xeomin

If you wake up regularly with headaches or pain and discomfort in your jaw, neck, or shoulders, you may have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder or bruxism. TMJ disorders are characterized by jaw problems, including clicking or popping in the jaw and difficulty opening and closing your mouth. On the other hand, bruxism is when you clench or grind your teeth.

Millions of people have either a TMJ disorder or bruxism, and some people have both. If you have one of these problems, you are not alone. TMJ disorders can cause patients unnecessary pain and untreated bruxism can lead to tooth damage and sensitivity.

While many dentists treat TMJ disorders (also called TMD) and bruxism with night guards or splints, which are very helpful, we at The Henderson Dentist, also treat TMD and bruxism with Xeomin. Xeomin is injected into painful problem areas to relax them and provide relief.

Xeomin treatments are quick and easy, making them suitable for TMD and bruxism pain. Of course, your specific treatment depends on your situation and your needs. Dr. Wilson may recommend both a night guard and Xeomin treatments for best results.

How Does BOTOX/Xeomin Provide Pain Relief?

BOTOX/Xeomin relieve pain caused by TMJ disorders and bruxism by relaxing the muscles in your face, preventing jaw tension, clenching and teeth grinding Relaxing these muscles helps relieve pain in your jaw, neck and shoulders and reduces the occurrence of migraines and headaches.  It can also help protect your teeth from damage due to the pressure of grinding.
